A Harrison type gauge was in use 1904-59. A Lea gauge was installed in September 1959, resited in April 1971.  An "A Class" bubbler replaced the stiling well systems in November 1987.

For some time the gauge at Heysham has been prone to blocking by sedimentation it is thought due the dredging in the area.

During July and August 2013 channel 2 was fluctuating ~40-50mm high. General maintenance was carried out on 05.09.2013

there were a number of problems with the gauge during 2014. During January and February readings were low over HWs. During March, June and July and again September to December readings from CH1 were approximately 30mm high probably due to dredging in the harbour. From July there were problems with the system blocking. At the end of the year readings were again recording high.
