A massive earthquake magnitude 9.0 occurred at 14.46 JST (05.46 UTC) on Friday 11th March 2011 with the epicentre situated approx. 70km east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tohoku. It was the largest ever earthquake to hit Japan triggering a tsunami with waves of up to 40.5m high and travelling inland up to 10km.

When Tokyo Peil was added to the RLR diagram in 2003 the relationship between Tokyo Peil and the datum was drawn as 2.061m. The correct figure is 2.041m see letter of 16th Dec.2002. When this was corrected the RLR factors changed from 1998 value of 4.961m to 4.941m and 1999 onwards value from 4.965m to 4.945m. The data has been adjusted
