National Report of Cote d'Ivoire to the Sixth Meeting of the GLOSS Group of Experts, Toulouse, 12-14 May 1999 by Angora Aman Université de Cocody, UFR SSMT, 22 BP 582 Abidjan RCI Angora.Aman@orstom.ci In Cote d'Ivoire we will have two tide gauges, one established at Abidjan (East) and the other at San Pedro (West). The former is controlled by the Government and with the reconstruction of the harbour at Abidjan it has become difficult to collect tidal data for sea level studies. It is urgent to address a letter to the Government in order to permit researchers collecting data for the GLOSS programme. The second tide gauge has been acquired by the CROA (Centre de Recherche Oceanologique d'Abidjan). The site of San Pedro located in the west of Cote d'Ivoire has been appropriated and the tide gauge technician based at San Pedro will be responsible for the operation and maintenance. [The release of this IOC provided gauge from customs is expected shortly - PLW]. Recommendations: 1. A letter must be address to the Cote d'Ivoire Government by the GLOSS Chairman in order to let researchers collect tidal data for sea level measurements. 2. To access the tidal data in real time a transmission system is needed. Two computers are required (one in Abidjan at CROA and one in San Pedro) which must be connected. 3. Free software are needed for tidal data analysis. [All attendees at the University of Cape Town Training Course in November 1998 were provided with TASK-2000 software. If extra copies are needed then Woodworth may be contacted and/or Pat Caldwell at the University of Hawaii can provide copies of their software - PLW]. 4. Maintenance of tide gauge established at San Pedro in charge of the GLOSS programme. 5. Money for the technician who is in charge of collecting data. [I believe items 4 and 5 are a misunderstanding of how GLOSS works, primarily by national contributions to an international programme. Moreover, the acceptance by Cote d'Ivoire of the gauge was on condition that it would be installed and operated on behalf of GLOSS - PLW].
